Arsenal

For centuries, Venice was the centre of maritime trade and culture on the Mediterranean. Using its complex network of nautical routes, it connected various cultures, nations and languages. The Great Arsenal, located within the walls of the old city, is one of just a few preserved Venetian arsenals that formed a part of this military supply chain .

Arsenal is one of the seven buildings of its kind that have remained preserved until today. The original structure has completely been preserved and all the contemporary supplements have been realized with the cooperation of conservators. The outer walls date from the 18th century, while the concrete structure and the roof grid are from the '50s of the past century.

Following the fall of the Republic, the Arsenal served as a city warehouse before being heavily damaged by allied bombing at the end of World War Two, only the external walls remained standing. In the early fifties the building was converted to offices and warehouse for a retail chain but years of neglect left the building a dilapidated shell by the early nighties.

Following almost four years of planning, extensive community consultation and a twelve month restoration, the Arsenal took its current form opening to the public in August 2005.
