First public clock, 1671
The first public clock in the world was constructed and set up in 1671. In Zadar, it has long been known what the time was. In 1555 a public city clock is mentioned to be located on the bell tower of the Forty Martyrs Church or the Church of St. Barbara that was situated close to today's cafe Forum. The clock on Narodni trg is continuously functioning since 1803! The bigger bell that chimes at full hours was transferred from the Kapetanova kula (Bovo dí Antona) and the smaller one that chimes quarters of an hour, was brought from the neighbouring Church of St. Laurence. The clock was made and assembled by the city watchmaker Martini.
